Jon Snow | Original Cdv Card Painting
Mixed media on antique Cdv photograph. Archivally framed and matted under UV reflective Plexiglas.
Cdvs, short for 'carte-de-visite,' are a smaller, earlier version of the cabinet card. Cdvs are about 4 inches high and only 2.5 wide, but are similar to cabinet cards in that they are photos mounted on cardstock. They first became common in the 1860s, and the dates of these particular cards are generally from the 1870s and 1880s. By the 1890s, the cdv had mostly disappeared in favor of the larger cabinet card format. These pieces are acrylic and oil, painted directly upon antique cdv photos.
